Why Elope on the Great Ocean Road?

Eloping is all about keeping things simple, romantic, and stress-free, and the Great Ocean Road delivers on all fronts. Here’s why it’s a top-notch spot for a wedding without the fluff:

  • World-Class Scenery: Think towering cliffs, rolling waves, and golden-hour sunsets that’ll make your wedding photos look straight out of a travel mag.

  • Budget-Friendly: Skip the pricey venues and go for a stunning natural backdrop that costs next to nothing.

The Best Elopement Spots Along the Great Ocean Road

1. The Twelve Apostles

One of the most famous landmarks in Australia, the Twelve Apostles is an epic backdrop for saying your vows. The best time? Sunrise or sunset, when the limestone stacks glow golden. Just be mindful of the tourist crowds – a weekday morning will give you more peace and quiet.

2. Loch Ard Gorge

This secluded cove is like something out of a fairytale. Surrounded by towering cliffs and with a history as dramatic as its scenery, Loch Ard Gorge is perfect for couples looking for a romantic, dramatic setting. There’s even a small beach where you can set up a simple ceremony.

3. Gibson Steps

If you fancy saying “I do” with the ocean at your feet, Gibson Steps offers a stunning stretch of beach framed by towering cliffs. It’s a little off the beaten path, making it perfect for a more private ceremony.

4. Erskine Falls

If the beach isn’t your thing, why not tie the knot in the heart of a lush rainforest? Erskine Falls, near Lorne, offers a magical setting with cascading water and ferns all around – it’s a true hidden gem.

5. Aireys Inlet Lighthouse

For a bit of coastal charm, the Aireys Inlet Lighthouse is a stunning place for an elopement. The red and white lighthouse stands tall against the deep blue of the ocean, making for a picture-perfect ceremony location.

Elopement Essentials

The Legal Bits
You’ll still need to complete a Notice of Intended Marriage at least one month before your elopement. As your celebrant, I’ll guide you through the paperwork and make sure everything’s legal and stress-free.

Witnesses
Every legal ceremony in Australia requires two witnesses over the age of 18. Don’t worry if you’re keeping things small—some couples bring their photographer and videographer.

Photographer: Must-Have or Optional?

Look, you could just snap a selfie, but let’s be real – you’re eloping in one of the most beautiful places in Australia. A great photographer will capture all those epic moments, so you have something to look back on forever.

What to Wear? Keep It Easy!

The beauty of eloping is you don’t have to worry about a big, fancy outfit (unless you want to!). A flowy dress that catches the sea breeze, a relaxed linen suit, or even barefoot beachwear – whatever makes you feel like you.

Making a Day (or Weekend) of It

One of the best things about eloping on the Great Ocean Road is turning your wedding into a mini getaway. Here’s how you can make the most of it:

Road Trip: Drive the winding coastal road and stop at all the must-see spots along the way.

Wine & Dine: Celebrate with a meal at one of the top restaurants in Lorne or Apollo Bay.

Stay Somewhere Stunning: Book a cozy Airbnb, a beachside cabin, or a luxury glamping tent.

Adventure Together: Go hiking, surfing, or even take a helicopter tour over the coastline.

Let’s Keep It You

The beauty of an elopement is that it’s all about the two of you. Want to hike to your ceremony spot in walking boots and change into something fancy at the top? Go for it. Prefer a pre-sunrise vow exchange and coffee in hand? Love it.

I work closely with couples to create ceremonies that feel personal, heartfelt and real. No fluff. Just your story, your way.

My Tips for a Smooth Great Ocean Road Elopement

  • Weather-wise is wise – The coast can be a little unpredictable, so pack layers and be open to embracing a windswept veil or two.

  • Plan some time to just breathe – One of the biggest joys of eloping is having space. Time to soak it all in. I always recommend building in a little pause after your ceremony—whether that’s a champagne toast on the cliff or just holding hands by the ocean.

Elopement Packages? I Can Help.

While I don’t offer all-inclusive packages myself, I know and love working with talented local photographers, florists, stylists and videographers along the Great Ocean Road. If you need recommendations, I’m more than happy to connect you with the kind of people who’ll treat your day with the same care and love I do.

Let’s Make It Happen

If the sound of an elopement on the Great Ocean Road sounds appealing, I’d love to help you craft a ceremony that honours your love story. Whether it’s just the two of you or a few cherished guests in tow, I’ll make sure the moment you marry is meaningful, calm and full of heart.

You bring the love, I’ll bring the words.
